To all that have been praying for Aubrey-

I’m sorry I don’t know how to update the blog like Matt and Carrie but I wanted to post something. Please keep your thoughts and prayers with Matt and Carrie today. I just talked to Matt and this will probably be the hardest day of their lives. Aubrey is on the downfall and this is something a parent should not have to go through. Matt and Carrie have been so strong the past 6 months but they will really need your love and support in the following days.

    I love you Aubrey!

  • still a no go

Well Dr. C. came by today and said that she was looking better but they need the liver to kick it into gear so they can do the surgery. He is going to stop by again tomorrow and see what is up but as it stands right now they still can’t do the surgery and her liver isn’t doing much of anything so we don’t know what is going to happen. The surgery isn’t a fix all and we don’t think it’s going to fix everything but it’s the only chance that she has… so cross your fingers and pray that her liver can pick up for a little while.

    a little closer

Well the new attending is making things happen. He came in and changed a couple of her meds up and then switched some things on the oscillator… she has been on the regular vent for 2 days now and she is off one of her blood pressure meds. They want her off or close to off of the other blood pressure med before they take her to surgery. The surgery won’t fix all the problems but it is the first step that we have to take to get there. They have come down on a couple of her meds because they are alright with her moving a little now… We aren’t there yet but Aubrey sure is trying.

    one more thing

    08/03/2008

Well they did the vent test and she passed but when surgery came to look at her on Sat they said they didn’t want to do the surgery if she was on the blood pressure meds. They were worried that if they cut into her they wouldn’t be able to stop the bleeding so now we are working on the bp meds. Aubrey is down to about half the meds that she was on yesterday so over the rest of today and tonight they are going to keep going with the meds… but very slow so Aubrey doesn’t freak out. They took her off one of her meds that was keeping her still and she is a wild woman today… she hasn’t opened her eyes for us but she is moving all around (she isn’t allowed to right now). So we hope tomorrow or Tuesday they can take her in for surgery and fix her gut. If the gut gets fixed they can start feeds and if they start feeds then the liver should start to get better.

    A new hope

Today was a day of experimentation. Dr. R took Aubrey off of the oscillator and onto a conventional ventilator for a test run. After about an hour of guess work on the vent settings they found Aubrey’s sweet spot. She was able to stay in a good zone with good gas results for 7hrs, then they placed her back on the oscillator. We were advised by surgery that the gut repair could take 4-6hrs, so we now know she can go from a respiratory point of view.  Now we need to hope the rest of the systems can go.

With a new month, a new rotation of residences start. The month of August has brought Aubrey her original resident doc from the NICU. Also on call this weekend is her original surgeon, taking a break from retirement. So the two people who started this have a chance to finish it.

As with every story we have a plot twist. The liver that we all have been worried about for some time, is probably at its weakest point. From our point of view its go time, we just need to make sure everyone else is on this page with us. This surgery is not a fix all, but it will give Aubrey a fighting chance. And as we all know, she is a fighter.
